Exploring the Surfaces: Uart Sand & Pastel Premier

Continuing the Journey…

Uart Sand was the next surface out of my sampler pack.  This is a surface that I am already familiar with, and so I didn’t have that “wow” experience like I did with Uart Dark.  I have worked with Uart Sand before.  It comes in an impressive range: 280 grit – 800 grit.  I do like this surface, and believe it will be one of my go-to surfaces.  I just need to determine which grit I like best.

So, I decided that this piece was going to be “perfect.”  That is a bad place to go.  Whenever I start out thinking like that, it just doesn’t turn out the way that I expected.  I forgot my purpose, and that was to test out a surface, not create an amazing painting.

Once I realized that I was just overworking this mini painting, I decided to move onto Pastel Premier, specifically Italian Clay – this is the name of the warm, neutral, gray color.  I am guessing that this is a medium grit surface.  I am not really sure because it wasn’t marked on the back.

I liked this surface too!  I did get a little bit of pastel dust.  I am always surprised when I don’t get a lot!  One of the very first surfaces that I worked with created a lot of dust.  And dust falling out of your painting is like money falling out.

My Pastel Premier piece looks dramatically different. I approached this by starting with a dry-wash under-painting in red tones.  I like the way it turned out. I think I am going to have a tough time picking a fav.
